Ages 6 to 8: cash, coins, and the four jars
At this age, money has to be physical. Digital payments are invisible to young kids, so they cannot learn from them yet. Use real coins and bills. Let your kid hold money, count it, and hand it to a cashier themselves. The tactile experience of money leaving their hand is the lesson.
- Set up the four jars and divide any money (gifts, a small allowance, found coins) into them every time.
- Give a few real money moments per week: let them pay for the bread at the store, count the change, decide if they have enough for the small thing they want.
- Introduce saving for a specific, visible goal. A six-year-old can save for a five dollar toy and feel the wait.

Ages 9 to 11: their first real budget
Now you can add structure. Nine to eleven year olds can handle a small, regular allowance and the responsibility that comes with it. This is the age to hand over a real budget for a real category. Budgeting for kids does not need a spreadsheet or an app; it needs real money and a real limit. Maybe they are now in charge of their own small spending: the toy, the treat, the app. When they run out, they run out, and you do not bail them out. That boundary is the entire lesson.
- Give a regular allowance they can count on, so they can plan around it.

Ages 12 to 14: bank account, card, and a real mistake
By twelve, a kid is ready for the real tools. This is the age for a first bank account, often a kid or teen account with a debit card you can monitor. Digital money becomes appropriate now because the foundation is built: they already understand that money is finite, because they spent years with the jars. Now they learn to track it when they cannot see it.
- Open a real bank account and let them use a monitored debit card. Watching a balance go down teaches tracking.
- Move them to a larger, less frequent allowance (monthly instead of weekly) so they have to plan across a longer horizon.
- Expand what they are responsible for buying: more of their own wants, some of their own needs.

- Let a real mistake happen. A blown fifty dollars at thirteen is a bargain compared to the same lesson at twenty-five with rent on the line.
The big win at 12 to 14 is independence with a safety net. They are making real decisions with real money and real consequences, but you are still there to debrief, not rescue. The goal is that by the time they leave home, they have already made most of their beginner money mistakes under your roof.
A blown five dollars at eight is the cheapest financial lesson your kid will ever get. Let them spend it.

How much allowance by age?
This is the question every parent asks, and there is no single right answer, only a few useful guidelines. A common rule of thumb is roughly one dollar per year of age per week, so about six dollars a week for a six-year-old and twelve for a twelve-year-old, but adjust for your budget and what the allowance is meant to cover.
The amount matters less than two decisions: what the allowance is for, and whether it is tied to chores. If the allowance is meant to cover their own wants, it can be small. If you expect them to start buying some of their own needs, it grows. The short version: a baseline allowance teaches money management, while paid extra jobs teach earning. Many families do both.
Whatever you choose, pay it on a schedule the kid can rely on, the same day every week or month. Unpredictable money cannot be budgeted. Half the value of an allowance is that it lets a kid plan ahead, and that only works if they know exactly what is coming and when.
The mistakes that teach the most
The single most common way parents accidentally block financial literacy is by protecting kids from money mistakes. It is a kind instinct and a counterproductive one. The regret of a wasted five dollars is the teacher. If you warn them off every bad purchase, or bail them out when they run short, you remove the only consequence that makes the lesson land. So let it happen. Let them blow their spend jar on something flimsy and feel it break by Tuesday. Let them run out of money before the thing they actually wanted.
